Getting the Lab(right) Write
You have 10 minutes to create a few summary sentences for each section of the lab report. This is to go into your lab book to use as a reference to help you create a fluid lab report. In the last lab many of the reports showed that there was a disconnect between sections.
After creating the summary outline as an individual you are to take your specific section and create a specific outline for it. Use labwrite to help you with this. (20 minutes)
Organize yourselves by lab group job(i.e. This is the first improvement that can be made. princ invest, data, safety, comm.) and exchange outlines. Add to your outline based on the discussions you have within your group. Underline any additions to your outline (8-10min)
Homework
Write the rough draft of your lab section for peer review tomorrow in class. You must have both a hard copy (for review) and an electronic copy. (for correcting and sharing with your lab group)
Lab Job
Lab Report Responsibilities
Principle investigator- Abs, Method, Biblio, Title, Format
Communicator-Introduction
Material manager/ Safety-Discussion
Data Collector-Results
Things to remember when writing
1. When describing a concept go from general to specific. Then give a real world example for the concept. One that illustrates to the reader how this may affect the world around them.
2. Say what you mean, mean what you say.
3. Use the appropriate terminology. The terms you have learned are an integral part of how biologist communicate. Make sure you are using them when possible.

Mr Smirk, we seriously need help.
We do not appear to have any bugs in our beaker.
But even if we do find some bugs, what is a biodiversity profile? What do we do with the bugs after we identify them? Should we get the bugs out of the Mountain Lakes leaf litter first or our personal samples?
Hey, why aren't the bugs dead? Why are they crawling around our lab table when they're supposed to be preserved in the little beakers?
If each batch under the lamp was supposed to take twenty-four hours to be done, how were we supposed to do all the samples in a period of three days (22.5 hours)? How are we supposed to finish one batch in 22.5 hours?
We expect a full and explicit response, please.
Can we throw away our dry, bugless leaf litter?
Mr. Smirk-
Are you going to be in class for any of this?
Lab table 6's results:

If pertinent, Table 1 Period 8 Sampled the soil of the school, and found no arthropods.
ummm does anyone know the web link to get to the labwrite sheets that smirk gave us? I only have the sheets for my old section and need the new ones. thx
please disregard the above comment
Are we supposed to use all the data posted on here for the control sample, or just our own?
If we use all the data, should we not mention the temperature of the area where we got our particular sample?
- Eleanor
If our group didn't find any arthropods in our leaf litter, are we supposed to use the other groups' data?
mr smirk-
i was wondering how much data you wanted. i have a few different examples of experimental data (about the arthropods) and a few examples of control. Should i make a bunch of different charts or one big one with the numbers of different arthropods added together? Because when I do that there is barely any data for me to write about in the lab report. (i am results) Do i just make arthropod chart(s) and then give the temperatures and sunlight and distance measurements?
meg...
I think that we're supposed to make two charts. The first shows biotic and abiotic factors for the first sample (like temperature and stuff) and list the arthropods, while the second chart says the same information for the second sample. That's how we're doing it, anyway.
Colin
for anyone who needs it this is a great website with information about arthropods
http://www.rvt.com/~lucas/school/arthro.html
for anyone in period 6 bio...
could you please post your data for abiotic and biotic factors of mountain lakes
like air tempereature, soil temperature, sunlight, and that kind of stuff?
also, if you need to make graphs, this is a good website http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/
thanks!
for people in period 8- or period 6, when is the lab report due?
are we supposed to email it to mr smirk by thursday as a rough draft? or bring in the final draft ready to turn in when we get back from break?
when is the lab due?!?!?!?!?!?
Our group
(Meg Reilly, Will Johnson, Katie Manning)
pd 8
We Found:
2 Araneae (spider)
2 Hymenoptera (ant)
Mr. Smirk, who's responsible for the conclusion in the lab? I can't find it on the list above. Is it the materials person?
Also, for this lab you want us to focus on one particular factor affecting biodiversity, right? Can this be any factor?
And are we supposed to explain why specific types of arthropods were found in different samples, or just why one sample was more biodiverse?
Thanks.
- Eleanor
Eleanor- The person in charge of the conclusion is the same person in charge of the discussion.
You may want to check with another group to find out specifically who that is.
Mr. Smirk - According to the list on this blog, it should be the safety/materials person. Is that correct?
- Eleanor
hey mr smirk... if a group has no data what is the data collector supposed to use to make the data section... if you answered this question in class i was absent so that makes my job even harder.
PLZ RESPOND!!!!
Elinor and Colin i need you to tell me the data we got. I am supposed to do the introduction but Colin finished that, so I must do the data presentation and... I have no data HELP!
I am in group five period six and I need our data now! I need the temperatures, arthropods, and any other data collected. Oh and I need Allegra's E-Mail so I can give her the report. Respond now or sow the seeds of your own destruction.
Please people- when is the lab due?!?!?!
and if u have data from period 6 mountain lakes (Abiotic and biotic factors) please post it
also- for whoever needed allegra's email it's amb6292@aol.com
~if you are in period 6 bio and have any kind of data for the abiotic and biotic factors of mountain lakes (i know i've said this a lot) but could you please
email it to me? my email is mtreilly@patmedia.net
if anyone needed it, the valley road data is :
2.6 meters from stream
Mostly Shadowed (40% sunlight)
15 degrees C Air temp
5 degrees C Soil temp
thanks!!!
Matt, what is your email address? If you post it I'll email our data to you. But the address you gave me in class didn't work.
Allegra's traveling right now and doesn't have easy internet access.
- Eleanor
hey eleanor, this is meg
i was wondering, could you please post what you took down for the
sunlight
air temperature
soil moisture
ground temperature
distance from stream
thank you so much
ps- if u are not eleanor but have this data PLEASE post it
and- WHEN IS THE LAB DUE?!?!?
I am in period 8
~meg
Hi Mr. Smirk,
I have been asking numerous people about when the lab report is due, and the people that do respond are all unsure. I apologize for not asking sooner but could you please post somewhere the due date for both periods (I don't know if we're separate or not)
thank you,
meg
MATT -
If you're on here, check your email. I just sent you our data.
MEG -
I have temperatures, but I'm in pd 6 and I think our sample came from a different place.
- Eleanor
Eleanor- that's perfect. you're data is supposed to be different from mine because you sampled from Mountain Lakes, and I sampled from valley road.
so whatever data that you have.... (which is from mountain lakes- and what i need)
please post it
thanks!
AND- WHEN IS THE LAB DUE EVERYBODY?!?!?!?!?!?
Okay, Meg, here are the temperatures for the area where we got our sample:
Air Temp: 4 degrees C
Ground temp: 2 degrees C
Leaf Litter temp: 4 degrees C
I'm not sure how to measure sunlight, but I think it was fairly sunny because the spot where we got our sample didn't have many trees right around, and most of the trees had lost their leaves.
Hope this helps.
~ Eleanor
jacob-
you could make a table listing the names of arthropods, and then put in the number of them, which would be zero!
-Megan
jacob-
my email address is meg2char2@aol.com in case you've forgotten.
Hadas- you're in charge of both the discussion and the conclusion, in case you didn't get my email.
Also, I think the lab is due 12/28/06- that's today. I think we're supposed to e-mail it to Mr. Smirk, but I'm not sure.
-Megan
thank you so much eleanor that helps a lot
also- megan said that the lab is due today by email
did anyone else hear that? cuz i did but no one was answering me
on whether it was really true or not
is everyone just gonna email him the stuff today???
eleanor- who's in your lab group/ what is your group called?
i need to put it in my chart...
WHEN IS OUR LAB DUE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
does anyone know Haley's email address?
-Megan
Meg - I think we're lab table 5, pd. 6.
- Eleanor
thank u eleanor
ps- Everyone: When is our lab due??????????
haley's email is
hltconnect@mac.com
lab is due the day we get back to skool
hey anonymous thanks for posting that
what period are u in?
cuz im in 8th- are they both the same?
Mr. Smirk says
rough draft due ASAP (by email)
and final draft is due in class on tuesday
Mr smirk please tell me what to do if you have no data.
i'm extremely concerned about this
-Jacob D
Mr. smirk-
unfortunately we have to request a short extension on the rough draft for lab group 2, pd 6. we will have it in by december 30 at the latest. unfortunately, one member of our group seems to be having trouble sending us his section. we will hand in the final draft on time, but we really need these two days to send in our rough draft
with all due respect
can you PLEASE be in class occasionally?
Mr. Smirk-
What do we do if one of our group members is away? Do you still want me to send the lab to you or wait until she comes back?
- Megan
Wilbur C! Check your email! PLz
Mr Smirk
what is your email adress?
M. SMIRK-
We are thinking about possible topics for our long-term project and were discussing the example you gave in class of the video game experiment. Would this be an acceptable project for us? Does it qualify as biology? What, exactly, qualifies as biology? What's a T-maze? What are daphnia? When is the final draft of the lab due? P
We hope that we are not overstepping the boundaries of politeness when we tell you that we expect a full and explicit response, please.
Thank you!
PS- When I say "us," above, I realize that of course you wouldn't let us do this project because it's already been done, but I want to know whether it counts as biology or not.
MR. SMIRK -
We are thinking about possible topics for our long-term project. What exactly qualifies as biology? For instance, would the example you gave with video games be acceptable (if it hadn't already been done)?
- Eleanor
henry/ whoever needs it:
smirk's email is
James_Smirk@monet.prs.k12.nj.us
word suckas
MR. SMIRK -
Would you like us to bring in a hard copy of the lab on Tuesday even if we already emailed it to you?
- Eleanor
hey eleanor, I can tell you the answer is yes. Its good to have both
have a happy new year,
Dillon
Mr. Smirk- did u get my part of the lab that i emailed 2 u?
mr smirk??
did u really write word suckas?
or is some1 pretending to be him?
thanks meg
Welcome Henry
btw- any ideas on titles anyone?!
Mr. Smirk-
Do you really want us to put group jobs in and if so where?
